This cars in one of only 37 Thunderbird Sport Roadsters built in 1963 with the formidable M-Code engine and one of fewer than 25 believed to exist today.Īccording to Ford factory records, this rare Thunderbird was built on October 5, 1962, and shipped to Twin County Motor Co. The Sport Roadster package included a passenger grab bar, unique side badges, and stunning 48-spoke Kelsey Hayes wire wheels. Kaufman returned with the stunning Sports Roadster, which built upon Thunderbird’s sweeping lines with a unique fiberglass tonneau cover extending from the trunk to behind the front seats, effectively transforming the four-passenger Thunderbird to a two-seater. Division Chief Lee lacocca tapped designer Bud Kaufman to develop a solution. While sales were strong through the late 1950s and early 1960s, purists besieged Ford with demands for the return of a two-place Thunderbird. This package consisted of the 390 V8, adorned with a single carburetor and back by the 3 speed, “Cruise-o-Matic” transmission. Of the 455 Sport Roadsters built in '63, 418 were built with the Z code engine package. Interior amenities include courtesy lighting, power windows, an AM/FM radio, swing away steering, locking console, and passenger grab handle When down, the iconic Sports Roadster tonneau cover is revealed, sporting two headrests molded into the fiberglass. The white, convertible top can be dropped with the flick of a switch, and raised just as easily. All interior trim is in well preserved condition, including instruments, glass, and gauges. Still retaining the original red leather interior, the front power seats and rear bench, are both complemented by gold piping only featured in '63. Being a California car, the rest of this original Tbird is in beautiful condition, only showing slight signs of patina. Having been resprayed once by our shop a few years ago, the exterior is like new, and laser straight. Presented in Rangoon Red, with chrome highlighting nearly everywhere else, this bird feels like it truly has taken flight. ![]()
